Although the helmet should work right out of the box, it’s best to give it a full charge first.
The charging port can be found on the back of the helmet. Lift the flap that is covering the port to avoid water coming in. Plug in the USB-C cable in the helmet and plug in the power in an USB-port or outlet.
The Ultra helmet has a light close to the power button which lights up red when charging and turns green when fully charged. It will take about 3-4 hours to fully charge.
How do I know when I need to charge?
With a full charge Ultra will last up to 10 hours in slow flashing mode with the lights set on maximum brightness - and even longer if you adjust the brightness & frequency in the Lumos app.
When the battery on the helmet is low, the power button will start flashing red. At this point there is approximately 30min of charge left in the helmet. When the battery of the helmet is critically low and is about to shut off, before it does so the helmet will beep several times to inform you that it is about to shut off.
You'll also be able to connect the helmet to the Lumos app and check the remaining battery level of your helmet. You can read more about that here.
You can watch below video for reference. This video will show you:

Using simple bars to indicate charge of the Ultra on the app instead of a percentage number was a mistake. Fix this with an update.
I have no red or green light when charging is there a problem with my helmet ?
Hey Vanessa, thank you for your message. We'll reach out to you to determine how we can best assist you with this.
I have no red or green light when charging is there a problem with my helmet?
Hi Remmie, as a customer having the same problem, I found out that the red or green light is EXTREMELY low, but really extremely low.
Meaning it does exist but you almost can't see it unless you are in a totally dark room or put really well your hands around it.
It is a default on some helmets as others have a perfectly clear light (I saw 2 others with perfectly clear changing light).
Hope it helps
Thanks, Vanessa
let me try that :)
I received my Lumos Ultra today 18th April 2023. I also thought my helmet wasn't charging until I came across these comments. Upon rechecking and cupping my hands around the on/off switch area and cocking my head at a particular angle I noticed the dimmest of dim reddish glows. It isn't very clear at all. I guess I will have to wait for a couple of hours to find out if it is actually charging and for the light to turn green. I will report back. For such a premium product this is very disappointing. The app by the way is of no assistance. It merely shows the state of charge of the helmet when it was turned off. It doesn't indicate that the helmet is actually charging.
Ok guys I am back 2+ hours later and the helmet is fully charged. The world's dimmest red light has changed to the world's dimmest green light. If like me you are ever so slightly red/green colour blind, it is a pain in the butt checking if your helmet has finished charging. I guess it is something I will learn to live with but as I mentioned in my previous post for such a premium product it is disappointing.
@alistairs happy my comment has helped 😊 and your comment made me laugh when you mention the world’s dimmest red light changing to green.
What is surprising is that after more than a year Lumos still didn’t fix this issue on their helmets.
But apart from that it is a very cool helmet
Thank you for your original post Vanessa. Without it I would have been very grumpy for the remainder of the day. Knowing there were others with similar issues was bizarrely reassuring. That there is a fault either in production or electronic already raised with Lumos and one they need to deal with soothed my grumpiness. I have yet to put the helmet to the test on the roads but hopefully it is as good as my YouTube research suggests. Have a good one ✌️.
