Updating the Lumos app updates the software on your phone. Updating your device firmware updates the software inside your helmet, lights, or supported remote.
To use the latest features available for your setup, update the app first, then follow the firmware update prompts for your devices. Matrix and Kickstart 2 update to their latest applicable 2.4G firmware—not BLE. They can use scenes, synchronized scene changes, and synchronized power on/off, but not hazard lights.
You do not need to buy a new remote to use scenes and synchronized power and scene controls with a compatible setup.
Before you begin
- Make sure your phone has an internet connection to download updates.
- Turn on Bluetooth and allow the Lumos app to use it.
- Keep your phone close to the device being updated.
You do not need to delete or reinstall the app to update it.
1. Update the Lumos app
The update is available for both iOS and Android.
- On iOS: open the Lumos app’s listing in the App Store.
- On Android: open the Lumos app’s listing in Google Play.
Tap Update if an update is available. Once installation is complete, open the app.
For download links, see Download and get started with the Lumos app.
2. Connect your helmets and lights
Turn on the devices you want to update and wait for them to connect to the app.
If a device has not been paired with the app, pair it first. See Pair your helmet and lights with the app.
A device card alone does not mean the device is currently connected. Make sure the device is on and connected before starting its update.
3. Open the firmware update prompt
When an update is available, the app will prompt you to install it. You may also see an update marker on the device’s card in Dashboard.
Open the prompt, check which device is being updated, and tap Update now.

4. Let the update finish
Follow the instructions on the Firmware Update screen.
While the update is in progress:
- Keep the app open and your phone nearby.
- Leave Bluetooth on.
- Do not turn off the device or interrupt its power supply.
- Do not leave the update screen unless the app instructs you to do so.
Wait for the app to confirm that the update has finished. A temporary change in the device’s lights or connection is not, by itself, confirmation that the update is complete.
5. Turn the device on and wait for it to reconnect
Once the app confirms a successful update:
- Tap OK.
- Turn the device on.
- Wait for it to reconnect to the app automatically.
You do not need to pair the device again. The firmware update does not reset your device settings.
Once connected, open the device’s details to check its Firmware version.
For model-specific version information, see Which new features can I use with my devices?

After the update, turn your device on and wait for it to reconnect automatically. No re-pairing is needed.
6. Update the rest of your setup before using Customize
Repeat the process for every device with an available firmware update.
Customize is unavailable if any paired device is not running the latest firmware available for it. If you tap Customize before all devices are updated, the app will display a prompt asking you to update them first.
Turn on and connect each device that needs an update, complete its firmware update, and then return to Customize.
Updating one helmet or light does not update every device in your setup.
For devices staying on 2.4G, this means installing the latest applicable 2.4G firmware. You do not need to move to BLE or buy a new remote just to use Customize.
What happens if I use an older remote?
· Remote Lite — the round remote
Update the app and your compatible helmets and lights normally.
Remote Lite cannot be upgraded to BLE. Devices used with it stay on the compatible 2.4G system, while still receiving the available 2.4G firmware update.
· Lumos Remote — the square remote with charging contacts
After the initial device updates, the app may show a square remote card and ask which charging connection your remote uses.
If your remote has charging contacts, select the Pogo Pin option. The remote identification card will disappear, and your compatible devices will remain on 2.4G.
This is expected. You can continue using your remote and the new app’s supported scene and synchronization features.
· Lumos Remote — the square remote with USB-C
If a Matrix or Kickstart 2 is paired with the app, keep your setup on 2.4G. The app will not show the remote upgrade card, even if you own a USB-C remote and newer lights.
If all the helmets and lights you want to use together support BLE, continue with How to upgrade your USB-C remote and devices to BLE.
Common questions
1. Why is the app offering another firmware update?
A BLE migration happens in stages.
Your helmets and lights first receive the latest 2.4G firmware. After the USB-C remote has been updated and paired with the app, further updates become available to move your compatible helmets and lights to BLE.
An additional update prompt at that stage does not necessarily mean the first update failed.
2. I don’t see an update prompt. What should I check?
Check that:
- You have installed the latest app version.
- The device is powered on and connected to the app.
- Your phone has an internet connection.
- You are checking the correct device.
You may already have the latest firmware available for that device and setup. Compare its model and firmware version with Which new features can I use with my devices?
If you are unsure, contact Lumos Support with your device model, firmware version, remote type, and a screenshot of what you see.
3. The update failed or appears to have stopped
See A firmware update failed or stopped.
Do not delete the app, factory-reset your devices, or try an undocumented update method as a first step. Deleting app-local data can permanently remove draft scenes and custom flash patterns.
4. My remote no longer controls my devices
Check whether the remote and devices are using the same connection system. A 2.4G remote cannot control BLE devices.
See My remote is missing or stopped working after an update.
